franken-bug

hey up all, well this is my new bug, codenamed franken-bug because of how it looked when it turned up!
its a '66, plan is/was to get it put together quickly and have some fun over the summer with it and then alter it over winter to make it into a gasser, but time and money have got the better of me and the summers slipping out the door! so its looking more like it'll stay a ratty cal looker for a year or so and the move to gasser will be next winter instead!

anyway the story in brief is... it turned up like this as a half finished project....

Image

it was a bit of a mungral really! the previous owner had put some upright wings on the front, a later 'box with 4 stud brakes at the rear, wide 5's with addaptors up front and made some pretty odd choices about welding stuff up! but on the plus side it had a 2" narrowed beam, cali imported doors, bonnet and front clip and most of the welding that was done was done pretty well!

me and the mrs spent fking aaaaaaaages getting the paint off it, i'd have left it on but there were so many layers, and the top one had reacted with some of the others in places. so off it came back to bare metal!

Image

then it all got a coat of red oxide, i was tempted to leave it at that and run it for the summer but in the end i figured if i blacked it up it'd look a bit better (not really)

Image

amongst all the painting there was a fair bit of welding left to sort out, some nasty rot on the front quarters up the door seam, the Previous owner had opted to de-seam the passanger side in an attempt to sort it but it looked shit to be frank! so i repaired the drivers side with some sheet metal and the passanger side i had to make a seam from some L section that i hammered flat and then welded in place. its never gonna win a beauty contest but it certainly lookes better than it did de-seamed.

the rot..
Image

the finished result..
Image

and the seam i re made..
Image

and then we jump forward a bit to now..

i picked up a set of day mouldings wings the other day so the uprights are put away for a 68 i have in the back yard, the bodies back on the pan loose at the moment because i need it back off to run the fuel lines and some of the other daft bits. the burners are half painted, and the seats are ready to go in!

Image

Image

Image

Image

the seats are out of my old jeep, they were too comfy to scrap with it and as it happens they fit with no mods! full electric leather! Mmmm

and last but not least the motors my old 2109cc lump from badluckbetty, no turbo this time but its getting fuel injection instead to try and make it a bit more usable! pretty much got everything i need to rebuild it now so thats one of the next jobs!

Looking good Steve!

Everything looks good in matt or satin black 8-)

That seam repair method is genius! I took the seams off the volksrod and I agree, it looks poo

I like the sound of your gasser plans too.........

Love the Gas Burners Steve. And re-seaming your bug looks very skillful indeed. Respect ;)
I didn't realise Day Mouldings were still in business

Re: franken-bug

well i've sort of hit a wall with this at the moment, everywhere i turn im missing a part to complete it so progress has slowed basicaly to a halt again while i find some bits! but there is a little progress at least if not as much as i'd have liked.

i managed to get the wings in paint, they need a bloody good pollish like the rest of it but they'll do! makes it look a bit more complete at least!

Image

i bought some nice black anodized fuel fittings for it the other day but without the motor in place i've no way of cutting the lines to size and making them up. so i quickly slapped the case halfs back together and made up a shell of a motor so i can see where things are gonna go in the engine bay. rather annoyingly theres only one line i can make at the moment between the two fuel rails. the other ones are depentant on where i can route the hard lines to meet them, so a bit of a dead end there! but at least the carburetors or throttlebodies as their now known look pretty cool :P

Image

Image

i was hoping to build the motor propperly but i couldnt get hold of any rod bearings when i made an order the other day so its put it back a bit :(

i cant bolt the body down yet because i need to run the hard lines and do a few small jobs on the suspension/gearbox which is all a lot easier with the top off, but the copper pipe i got to run the lines with is 10mm and the fittings are 3/8 so they wont fit  so thats on hold too

but i've found a decent fuel reg on ebay that im having a bid or two on so fingers crossed that'll be mine soon and thats basicaly the last key part of the fuel system. and i got a kool oldskool looking straight through turbo muffler for it, only problem is its large flange and my headers a small flange one so theres some work to do to make it all work. but its a lot less work than making the 3" stainless one in the pics fit!

hopefully next time i'll have the lines in place. the body bolted down and i can start the build up propper!

Hi steve, nice work !
I have got a fuel gauge complete with wire and dash grill out of a 66 if you still need one, also got 66 only wheels etc plus a 66 body if you need to chop anymore bits out for yours at any time. Mark

Re: franken-bug

 could have done with some body cuts a couple of months back for it but its sorted now! whats the shell like? got a 68 bug in the back yard that needs the whole bottom 6" a new front clip. rear vallance, inner wings etc etc etc, if the 66 is any better i might have it off you

actualy if anyones reading this and has a stash of bits i need....

sloping front lights, 1200 style rear lights or at least the internals of them since mine have turned out to be empty! and a set of black door cards!

Re: franken-bug

well not a lot of progress again because im waiting on parts but i did pick up a cool oldskool looking turbo muffler for it, only mild steel and its large flange rather than the small flange i needed but its a lot less work altering the header than it was going to be to make 3" stainless bends up to get the other one to fit!

Image

with the header mods it'll tuck really nicely under the vallance/wing and the tail pipe will pop out just nicely behind the rear wheel. with a good coat of high temp enamel it'll look pretty cool i think! certainly better than your bog standard mondo!

was a bit bored this afty so i've started making some T bars, nowt special, just had some stuff laying around so i figured i'd save some money! little different too cause ive used tube rather than round bar, will look ok when their finished off and coated in gloss black!

Re: franken-bug

ok well still waiting on fuel line to turn up, i stupidly bought 10mm copper from b&q ages ago for it but the fuel fittings are imperial 3/8, which works out to 9.5mm, so it wont fit  my own fault but still frustrating so i've ordered some propper stuff now, i've got pretty much everything i think to finish the running gear off once it turns up so hopefully i can get it all ran through this weekend and get it all bolted back together!

in the mean time i painted up the muffler and modified the header so it now fits, i know its probably a compromise performance wise to shorten the collector but tbh now its shortened back a bit the muffler fits really nicely, tucks right under the wing and keeps it out of the way of yer shins! :D still got to weld in a lambda boss but i cant do that untill i have a sensor for it and i know what size etc.

Image

Image

my sis and her fella popped over on sunday and brought me a present!.....

Image

 quite fitting for the frankenbug, havn't quite decided whether to keep it as a dangly mirror thing, or to fill it with resin and make it into a gearknob!

and this im really stumped about, when i got the car half the trim holes were welded up and the other half not, i'd intended on running the chrome trim so i left the unwelded holes as they were, but now i've got it more or less together i cant decide if i prefere it with trim, or not, and to make things worse i found some old silver pinstripe tape and gave the door and front quarter a quick go over to see what it would look like and tbh i really like it! so now the dilemma!

do i A run the ratty trim (rattys all i have!) like so...

Image

(taped in place)

B pin stripe it and take a step back paint wise to weld up the remaining trim holes,

Image

Image

or possibly C run the trim but paint it black to make it stealth trim, and pinstripe up to it?

i know its down to me at the end of the day but i've got to admit im stumped!

anyway more soon...
